AMAZING INDUSTRIAL USES OF CASSAVA

Cassava is a dicotyledonoue plant belonging to the family of euphorblaceae.it is also known as manioc,tapioca,or yuca.The botanical name for cassava is manihotesculenia.

The cassava plant is a perennial shrubs that may be up to 4m high.A mature cassava plant has two kinds of roots.The fibrous ones which continue to absorb water and minerals actively from the soil and the tuberous ones which store food material.
In West Africa a large number of cassava varieties exist. Recommended varieties for Nigeria climate are CH50,53101, 55124 and Ch419.
The cassava tuber consists of about 15% peel and 85% of flesh. Tge flesh which is the edible portion has the following approximate composition
Water 62%,carboh carbohy which is mostly starch you s 35%, protein 1.2%, fat 0.3%, minerals 1%.
It can be seen that cassava is very high in starch content and very low in protein. The tuber also contain small amount of prussic acid which is poisonous to humans. A few varieties of cassava contain very low amount of mussic acid and can safely be eaten raw or boiled. Most other varieties of cassava must be processed to reduced the prussic acid content before they can be safely consumed.
Cassava is a multi purpose root crops that has a wide range of industrial uses. Some of the industrial uses of cassava starch are listed below.
  • Natural adhesive: When treated appropriately it makes a good natural adhesive such as roll dried adhesive and liquid adhesive.

  • Corrugated cardboard
  • Re moistening gums
  • Wall paper and other home uses
  • Foundry
